Why Join the Federation of BC Writers?

If you write (or dream of writing), membership offers you more than a name on a list—you get access to a community, resources, and opportunities tailored to your journey. With over 1,800 members across genres, skill levels, and regions, the Federation of BC Writers helps writers connect, grow, and be seen.

Your dues are invested back into our community: they support staff, presenters, workshops, and subsidized programming.

Health and Dental Plan - the Federation of BC Writers is a proud member of the Writers Coalition Health and Dental program. This plan is available to FBCW members, but operated independently. Please visit their website to learn more and to check eligibility.

We have divided all of our membership benefits into four categories: Learn, Write, Connect, and Promote

Learn: Develop your craft, gain fresh perspectives, and stay current

Writing Intensives – 5 Day online events dedicated to specific topics in writing. Past intensives have included: Memoir, Creative Nonfiction, Romance Writing, Marketing, Creativity, New Year Resolutions, Editing, and much more.  Writing Intensives have learning and engagement sessions at 11am and 2pm. They often include an activity based session at 9am that connects with the theme of the week. Members get access for $65 dollars. (online)

Webinars  – Accessible, bite-sized learning opportunities to sharpen skills or spark new ideas. Webinars are interactive and aim to be approximately 1.5 hours in length. (online)

Contest Bank – A curated, regularly updated listing of writing contests and opportunities just for members. (online)

WordWorks Magazine – A full-colour magazine published three times a year, packed with essays, craft articles, interviews, and member news. The magazine features writers from Canada and beyond with a focus on providing new insights to our members and the writing community.  Regular, Youth, and Senior members can have their copies mailed as part of their membership. (print and digital editions)

Book Club for Writers – A dedicated discussion space for books on the craft of writing. This ongoing series is free for members and focuses on discussing a given book. The session offers an opportunity to join breakout rooms for more nuanced conversations. Use the opportunity to connect reading with reflection and community. (online)

The moment I joined the FBCW I gained a sense of community and belonging. Besides publishing a gorgeous magazine full of writing-related articles, personal essays, and member book launches, the FBCW also offers events, workshops, seminars, and other educational opportunities. It’s all about writer-to-writer connection and promoting writers in the greater community.

Write: Support your writing life, practice, and visibility

Writing Circles – Peer groups focused by genre, interest, or stage of writing. Writing circles are exclusive to members of the Federation of BC Writers.  This program is one of our most popular and regularly includes 30+ unique circles with over 300 participants. Spaces are limited based on the needs of each individual circle and a space is not guaranteed as they fill up fast.

If you don't see a circle that matches your goals or needs, pitch us your idea for one and we will help you make it come to fruition; we would love to have you join the program to help us create more opportunities for writers. Training is provided. (online)

Writing Sprints – Regular, facilitated writing sessions designed to help you focus, find accountability, and build momentum in your projects. (online)

Seasonal Writing Challenges – Seasonal challenges provide structure, community encouragement, and milestone check-ins to keep you on track. (online)

Submission & Exposure Opportunities – Through WordWorks, Launched, regional reading series, contests, and more, you’ll find chances to publish, be featured, or gain recognition. (online)

Tax/CRA Recognition – Membership in an arts organization helps establish your credibility as a practicing artist, which can be relevant in tax and grant applications.

FBCW is doing some of the best promotion and support of writing in Canada. It's one of  my go to's for learning something new in writing and I've been doing this for decades
